At the close of the 19th century when great sailing ships ruled the seas, a Scottish sailor on his way to Australia discovered that old and torn sailing canvas could be soaked with a mixture of oils to produce waterproof coats. The idea was quickly adapted by Australian drovers (one who drives cattle or sheep) and the durable oilskin coat became an outback legend. The early linseed oil coats used to crack and rot over time but through the years new oil and wax treatments improved giving coats greater protection from the elements. Kakadu Traders then developed the Microwax‚™ system which uses current technology to perfect the oilskin coats' defense against wind, rain, snow and storm. The unique Microwax‚™ process uses tightly woven long fibered cotton which gives each garment built-in climate control. Kakadu Traders' products are designed for comfort but made to endure. Our first drover coat, age 80, is still around after all the abuse from mother nature.
